Well.....another year and another disappointment for my beloved Cubs. I know Jennifer usually gives you updates on the family, but I have to vent. If you turn the US flag upside down you are in distress, well....hence the Cubs logo. Going into this post-season, the first real chance to get to the World Series was out there for the taking. I knew there was a kiss of death when most of the ESPN.comers were picking them to win it all. It should have sent up a red flag. However, I started to feel good. Just maybe....maybe.
Then, the gopher ball that changed everything. Up 2-0 in the 5th inning, Ryan "Dump"ster who had walked the bases loaded gave up a grand slam and there went the season. We were sitting in Re-Petes and I made some very choice comments about the team. Jennifer said it was just a game - and that received the scorn of Cubs fandom right there. I was not allowed to say things to the TV again. Good thing Caddy can't understand what I said. I did not watch Game 2 or 3. I already knew the outcome. Around 3 a.m. this morning, Molly the wonder dog got up and needed to go to the bathroom. As she went out, I went to check the score. When I got back to bed, Jen asked what I was doing. I told her that the Cubs got beat. She said she was sorry. I am too.
I am numb to the Cubs right now. I have taken down the garden flag. Fall has officially started for me. I will not watch the World Series. Who cares. However, when the doldrums of winter hit in Feb., I will be looking forward to another season of ups and downs. Why do I keep doing this every year? I don't know, but I feel like I need to walk into a room of Cub wearing jersey fans and say, "Hi. My name is Darren. I like the Cubs..."
