Today is the first Razorback home game. Daddy is going, but Mommy and Caroline are not. We have a GREAT tailgating spot...close to the stadium, plenty of room to set up the grill, and close to good friends...but I don't get to go with Darren to enjoy it today. I could go...but I'm choosing not to. It's just too soon to leave the little miss with somebody else for more than an hour or two. The next home game is in 3 weeks, and should be a daytime game, so hopefully I'll be able to leave her for several hours and enjoy myself at the game. I've been talking about having a beer during football season for months now, so I hope I'm able to indulge myself!
These are some of my favorite pictures of Caroline! She and Daddy will definitely have a common love of sports! Thanks Kelli for Caroline's first Hog outfit!
This was the other night. Darren was snuggling with Caroline on the couch when she decided to show him "who's the boss"! This is only the tip of the iceberg, I'm sure!

Okay, "chick" probably isn't the best way to refer to the newly announced VP nominee, but that's just my style. John McCain has just introduced Sarah Palin, the governor of Alaska, as his vice-presidential running mate. A quick visit to Wikipedia tells me that she's a mother of 5 (wow!), the youngest of whom is only 4 months old, and that she returned to work only 3 days after giving birth! What a super-woman! As Darren said about her, she's a "gun-totin', hockey playin', former beauty queen". I think he's already got a crush!

It'll be interesting now to see how the next couple of months pan out...

This is Miss Caroline's video debut...her first bath in the hospital! Please excuse all the random conversation in the background, and just focus on our sweet little newborn! :-)

Remember these guys? The California Raisins! I had all four of them!
(More on the raisin at the end of the post...)
Caroline passed a major milestone tonight! She officially has a belly button now! Her cord "stump" has been loosening up over the last few days, and I kind've just figured it was coming off either tonight or tomorrow. I made sure I told Darren to be extra careful when he changed her diapers, and definitely NOT to pull it off, no matter who loose it looked. So while I was taking a little nap before the "midnight shift", it fell off during one of her diaper changes. I have to admit, it makes me sad to think that the last piece of what connected Caroline and I through the womb has fallen off. I told Darren that she's a "big girl" now! I think I'll probably say that at least once a week over something new that happens. I also informed him that now that she has a real belly button, he'll have to live in fear of the day that she wants to get it pierced! I like to make him think about things like that!

Okay, so now for an explanation of this post title. As most of you know, I am an only child. Because of this, I didn't know anything about babies growing up. However, there were a few times throughout my childhood when we lived in the same city as my Uncle Dixie and Aunt Caryl, and their 3 daughters, Julie, Lori, and Lisa. My cousin Lisa was born when I was in 2nd grade and we lived in Florida. I remember going to visit her as soon as she came home from the hospital. This was probably my first experience with a newborn. A few weeks later, my cousin Julie (who was probably 4 or 5) told me about Lisa's belly button "falling off". Naturally, that scared me. I couldn't imagine something like that happening! Then she said the words that have "haunted" me for years..."I thought it was a raisin!" Only now, 20-some years later, do I finally understand what that means!

Well, it's official...she is her Mommy's girl! Looks like she might follow Mommy's career path into teaching. "Why?", you might ask...
Check out the "look" that Miss Caroline has already perfected!
That's Mommy's favorite "look" to keep the kiddos in line at school!

HELP!

Let's go back a few days and see what happened Saturday night...that absolutely scared the CRAP out of me!

Darren was up with Caroline, waiting to feed her around 10:30, so I went ahead to lay down in bed. I had just dozed off while watching Roadhouse (never seen it, but I love Patrick Swayze), when I'm awakened by Darren shouting, "Jen! Help!", from Caroline's room on the other side of the house. Well, of course, I panicked! I tore out of bed and raced across the house shouting "What? What is it?". I thought something horrible must have happened, like she'd fallen or wasn't breathing or something truly terrible. When I got to her room, I finally saw the "emergency" that had befallen Daddy...projectile POOP all over the changing table, Caroline, and Darren's hand! At first I was relieved, then I was upset that he'd scared me so badly! Leave it to Mommy to save the day by getting all the nasty, poopy stuff in the washer, and Daddy cleaned up Caroline and got a clean diaper on.

Fast forward to last night. I'm on the couch with Caroline for our midnight feeding. She'd just finished a 2 oz bottle of formula, had burped, and was dozing comfortably on Mommy's chest, when another "emergency" came up. This time it was me yelling for Daddy's help. But I swear I did not do it quite as urgently as he did, so as not to completely scare him to death!! In the blink of an eye, Caroline had gone from a peaceful, almost-slumber, to a vomit-spewing machine! All over Mommy!! Fortunately, none of it got on the couch or throw blankets...just on me, Caroline, and her blankie. Just another midnight load of laundry...{sigh}

Well, it has been a few days since we have posted, but the little gremlin is running this house and she is having a hard time training us. It has been a busy week for Caddy and family. We were worried about Caddy's weight, which won't be the last time a woman in the McKinney house worries about weight, so her Dr.'s appt. was moved up a week. She was seen by the Dr. and she had gained 2 oz. The biggest change is Caddy is getting a double dose of "home brew" and "pre-made shine". The Dr. wanted to see her back on Friday to see if her weight had improved. Good news - gained 3 oz. He was so happy about her progress, he doesn't want to see her for 2 weeks.

Caddy's nights have been an experience. She has been eating every couple of hours, but at night we wanted to try it as needed. So, Caddy is eating around 10 p.m. and around midnight (usually a fun feeding too). However, Thursday was the first time we didn't wake her up to feed around 2:30 a.m. At one point during the night, Jen looked at me and said "Do you think we should wake her up and feed her?" In a classic man response, I said, "NO! If she is hungry, she will tell you." She got 4 hours of sleep that night. YEAH!!!!! Friday night was about the same. Hopefully, she can start to sleep a little bit longer. However, I think she has some of my brother's genes, sleeps all day and stays up during the night.

So, another week has gone and we haven't started drinking, heavy. Ms. Caddy has a foot appt. on Tuesday and we hope that goes well. So until our next post, here are a few pics of our girl.

I am shy while I am in the bathtub.

That was tough.

A little time to myself.

I'm pretty sure we've got a super model on our hands here. Leigh Ann came over Saturday morning to capture the babe in her official photo shoot. She did wonderfully...unless you include the part where she pottied on the white bearskin rug! We feel so lucky to have such a great photographer friend who could be here on Caroline's second day home...she was only 4 days old!

Well, to quote the great poet of the 80's, Tiffany, "I Think We're Alone Now." We haven't put too much up in the last couple of days, because things around the house have been a little busy. Jen has been helping Caddy get use to her new house, Molly the pup is wondering what is this thing that yells all the time, and I am wondering "what did we do?".

First, let's start with the center of the McFamily world, Caddy. She has been home for about a full day now. Things are a little different than at the hospital. For one thing, at the hospital she'd leave at night and come back every two hours. (Sidebar - I know when she is 16, I will want her to stay home all the time.) Since she has been home, we have broken in the crib, the pack and play, had a bath, made a long night of crying and being hungry, and gotten to ride at the Six Flags of the McFamily - THE SWING!

We got to break in the new crib on the first day home. It is very nice. She really did enjoy sleeping in it. We even have a video monitor to watch her while she sleeps. (Another sidebar - why do we have to "invest" in elaborate bedding? I know it looks good, but I am just waiting on the first throw-up and wonder we payed how much for a spit up rail pad?)

We have even had a bath. Talk about an adventure. Trying to fit the baby bathtub in the sink and making sure she doesn't roll out or us hitting the bathtub rolling her around is enough to make Caddy go without a bath for a couple of days. During her bath time, we did get to use Uncle Tad's Johnson & Johnson products. It pays to have a relative who knows either Johnson or Johnson. I hear they are good people but a little old.

The nights have been interesting. When Caddy needs fed, Jen is up working with her. When it is crying time, Dad is right there. Last ngith was a great example. Caddy started crying around 1 a.m. Feeding time was not until 2 a.m. So, I am up with her. Good thing for American Chopper and Ace of Cakes on the DVR. (Sidebar again for dads - GET A DVR! It is the greatest thing ever. It will pay for itself on those long nights.)

This is all for now. We will post more, but Caddy is having lunch and I am going to try to get a little sleep while she has some home brew. Plus it is Cubs/Cards on tv today. Have to watch that. Until our next post, here are a few pics.

Just relaxing before I go home.

Since Jennifer has her hands full, I am going to fill everybody in on how Caroline Addison, or Caddy to her dad, arrived in this world. We got to the hospital around 6 a.m. After signing her life away and any future savings we might have, Jen was taken to the L/D room. By the time she got settled, it was 6:45 a.m. Nothing had really happened in the week since we went to the Dr, 2 cm and 80%.

Her Dr. came in around 7:15 a.m. and broke the water and the flooding of the towels began. The contractions began right after that. The contractions got worse and worse. At one point, Jen was telling the nurses that she was sorry for being so loud. Sidebar - God Bless those nurses. They made everything wonderful. We couldn't have asked for a better group of people to help bring Caddy into this world.

With the pain increasing, Jen got some IV pain meds around 9:15 a.m. That didn't help. However, I have seen Jen in that state before and have pictures of her on my phone. After about an hour of the contractions getting worse and pain meds not working, Dr. Joe and the fighting epidurals came a calling. The only problem with not getting the epidural earlier was Jen didn't have enough fluid from her IV. That didn't take too long to correct. As a spouse of a woman who had an epidural, I believe in them. My hands couldn't take much more of Jen's grip. I thought I would enter with 10 fingers and come out with two missing thumbs.

With an epideral at 10:15, the pain was tolerable and the contractions picked up. Around 11 a.m., the nurse made a quote I will never forget. Nurse Sharon checked Jen and said, "Let me go get a 2nd opinion, I think you are ready to push." After a 2nd opinion, the room was changed from a regular hospital room to a hang on to your handrails birthing center. The room was full of nurses. At one point, we had four nurses in the room helping out. A couple of more nurses came in and I told them the more the better.

At 11:06 a.m., the first contraction was recorded with pushing. An in the spirit of the Olympics, "Let the Games Begin!" The Dr. came in around 11:15 a.m. ready to catch the Caddy. (Sidebar - if you are following the timeline, it is 4 hours.) During the pushing stage, the nurses said that Caddy had a lot of hair. Now, I wasn't going to look, but I went to look and she had more hair than me. I am a firm believer that heartburn is associated with the hair.

Finally, at 11:24 a.m., Caroline Addison was born. YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She came out and went straight to Momma. A little time with mom talking about what purse goes well with a one piece babysuit, it was off to the scales. She was 6 lbs. and 11 ozs and 20 3/4 inches. Then the family showed up. There were a lot of relatives saying hi to our new girl.

Jen will catch everybody up on what else has taken place, but since I had a birds-eye view of what happened, I get to write the post. I am including a couple of pics from today and yesterday for everybody. Enjoy!

For God sake mom and dad, put some clothes on me.

It was a busy first day and Caddy was tired.

She's here! She finally decided to make her debut this morning at 11:24...just 4 short hours after we got things started! She was 6lb, 11oz and 20 3/4 inches. What a little babe, huh? I'm way to tired to tell the tale right now, but I'll get it done as soon as I've had some rest! ~Jen~

Today was officially my last day of pregnancy. It's been a tough day for me. I don't know what else to say about it, so I'll just post some pictures instead...
I love this shirt, and today was my last chance to wear it.
It says "Can you tell me if my shoes match?"

39 weeks belly pics...last ones before the babe comes out!

Darren assuming his new position at the diaper-changing table...
Our first "baby" Molly with Dad...
...and with Mom.

I got my first blogger award today from my sweet friend Mary Kate! I'm SO excited!

That means it's my turn to pass it along...

1. CONGRATS to Adrienne, my hair stylist and blog buddy, who just announced today that her little babe is a BOY!

2. One of my very best girlfriends Ami is a new blogger and I LOVE checking in on her little cutie, Joe Harrison. Check 'em out sometime!

3. I'd like to thank (again) our new family photographer (and friend), Leigh Ann, for the great maternity photos she took a couple weeks ago! She's planning to be here this weekend for the babe's first official photo shoot!

Here are a few more of the great photos that Leigh Ann took a couple of weeks ago! It's hard to believe that we've already made plans for her to come to the house this weekend for the babe's first photo shoot!!

This is Darren's favorite...

It's funny how when you're waiting for a babe to show up, people assume whenever you call them you must be at the hospital. I got that exact response from all 3 people I happened to call today. Also, I just realized that I have been posting on here a LOT lately, because my lack of a post so far today has caused alarm that perhaps I've gone into labor! (lol)

Anyway, we are still hanging on. I've basically resigned myself to the fact that the babe will NOT get to share a birthdate with her mom's favorite QB, and hopefully will also not share tomorrow's birthdate of one of the major presidential candidates. (*You'll have to Wikipedia that one yourself*) With our luck, she'll just wait until she's supposed to be here on Tuesday, and have a special birthdate all her own.

I have to give credit where credit is due...
I found this post on my friend Katie's blog, but in case you don't get there from my blog list, I thought it was necessary that I post a link to this myself. It's the funniest thing I've seen in a REALLY long time! Maybe all the laughing will, as Darren said, "Pop a baby out"!
Enjoy...click here and look for the post written on Wednesday, July 23.

Well, this is what I found to keep myself busy this afternoon.

I'm pretty sure (and embarrassed) to say that I'm not sure I've ever opened my stove like this before. It didn't look nearly as bad as I'd feared, but it gave me something constructive to do. This is the "after" picture...~~~
On a more positive note...we're going to Tontitown tonight to eat at Venetian Inn! This will be the first year that I can ever remember that I won't be able to attend the Grape Festival and enjoy my favorite spaghetti and chicken (not to mention Italian salad, hot rolls, and sweet tea)! So, of course, Venetian will have to fill the gap. The festival is next week, and I just don't see myself dragging myself out in the 105 degree heat and standing in line for an hour to have my favorite meal.

Maybe this will be our last "child-free" meal! I'm excited and scared!
Come on, baby girl...I think Sunday would be a GREAT day for a birthday!
(p.s. It's also Tom Brady's b-day! I know, I'm a loser for knowing that!)
~Update~
We didn't quite make it to our fabulous dinner in Tontitown tonight. I got a little nervous about half-way there (30 minutes up) because I think I might be having some contractions again...I just can't tell! Needless to say, I definitely didn't want to go into full-blown labor an hour away from home. So, now I'm home and Darren has gone to get pizza. Looks like the spaghetti and chicken will have to wait another couple of weeks...
